After weeks of speculation, Jason Robertson and the Dallas Stars have agreed to a multi-year extension.
The Stars had to make this happen before the season started. In the last few weeks leading up to the season, there had been rumors that contract talks had slowed down, and a possible trade in the works. However, the sides were ultimately able to come to an agreement.
The deal is 4 years at $7.75 million AAV and expires after the 2025-26 season. With Jamie Benn’s contract expiring the year before, the cap increasing steadily over the next few seasons, and Robertson maintaining RFA status after his current contract expires, he is looking at a huge payday for his next deal.
Robertson adds to the Stars core, having locked up defenseman Miro Heiskanen (8 x $8.45 million) and goaltender Jake Oettinger (3 x $4 million) in recent months. With the Stars having their best forward, defenseman, and goalie signed to multi-year contracts, they intend to compete in an open Central Division.
This offseason, the Stars hired former Golden Knights coach Pete Deboer, who has a history of deep playoff runs with the Devils, Sharks, and Knights. Deboer should pose a vast improvement to Rick Bowness’ system and the Stars hope that it solidifies their spot in the 2023 playoffs.
