In an offseason filled with quarterback controversy, we can officially take one name off the list. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott signed a four year $160 million contract to stay with the team. The 2016 4th round draft selection’s contract includes $126 million of guaranteed money along with a $66 million signing bonus, which is the highest in NFL history.
One of the more successful franchises in all of sports, earning themselves the nickname “America’s Team”, the Cowboys struggled last season with a 7-9 record. While a majority of that can be attributed to the loss of their starting quarterback who suffered a season ending injury in week 5 against the rival New York Giants, the Cowboys went 1-3 when their starting quarterback was able to play. Prescott is currently rehabbing from a compound fracture and right ankle dislocation, although the quarterback is expected to be available at the start of the regular season at full strength.
Securing their franchise quarterback is a step in the right direction as the cowboys hope to bounce back from their disappointing season and make a Super Bowl run. Prescott is going to try to recover from his season ending ankle injury in 2020 and continue his dominant play. Before getting hurt Prescott threw for 1,856 yards, 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, posting a 68% completion rate, while also throwing 30 touchdowns and nearly 5,000 yards in 2019. The Cowboys, whose last NFC championship game appearance was in 1996, will look to develop their defense and Prescott’s supporting cast with offensive weapons to complete their desire of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy once again.
